capoeira espaco

Just kidding, but seriously, I just saw the new commercial on TV, and now they even changed the lyrics. I mean, "Zoom, Zoom, Zoom" is O.K., but actually changing the lyrics, there must be a copyright somewhere, right? I think we should demand a capoeira reference somewhere, like a roda in the background of the next ad. Who's with me?

Too funny. I remember when I first got into Capoeira and heard the Capoeira Mata Um. Pretty crazy.

capoeira isn't really being promoted by the commercial at all, I mean there's no reference of capoeira at all, I didn't know about capoeria until well after the commercial. I say we get some capoeiristas in the next commercial.

mainstream is powerfull. may not need to (or be able to) stop it. Thoes who dont know, dont know, thoes who realize the capoeria reference know capoeira greater than just the use of the song. its ok.
better to be realize the opportunity to better control what happens next. put energy towards like you said the next ad. Still there will be bastardization. still someone will be offended. what can you do?

Ok, I have a serious comment this time.. VVhile I do think it's vvack that they don't have the rest of the lyrics, or change them (haven't heard this, but I don't really vvatch tv sooo..) Maritaca is right about the plus sides musically.. it's something familiar to "normal" people, then they hear the true song and it's like "Oh, I knovv this! It's a real song?" VVheras most capoeira songs sound very beautiful, but are also confusing {to the untrained ear} I kinda like that it's a.. almost like a secret betvveen capoeiristas.. like those commercials come on and I can hear a berimbau in my head.. "Hahaha, you suckas don't even knovv.." type of thing..
I vvatched the links Maritaca provided.. in response to the french one NOT DOVVN, I see your point birdie..
He's absolutely right, I mean.. They vvouldn't shovving the game.. there'd be no bateria.. it'd be all backflips and hugs and shit. The mainstream is NOT gonna (for the most part) come anyvvhere CLOSE to portraying the true capoeira.. That's up to us, up to capoeira. I mean, to be real.. I'm not trying to have capoeira become the nevv skateboarding of the early 2000's.. all mainstream, every geek off the street thinkin' he's the shit doing mobb kickflips and pushing mongo. You talk about capoeira bastardization and the losing of tradition and culture.. you're talking about mainstream promotion. You vvanna buy your abada's & berimbaus at VVal-Mart?
Not I, son.. not I.

We live in folly. To separate from society, is also folly.

Many whose lives have been touched by capoeira, and who are true to it, encountered capoeira on the wings of mainstream. They rented Only the Strong from blockbuster, they saw a game at a hiphop concert, Eddie Gordo, etc. Is it better they not have Capoeira because of an ideological disagreement with mainstream?

Hundreds of capoeira teachers do shows to supplement their income and get new students. They would love to get a spread in a fancy magazine or an interview on an evening news program. They make DVD’s that they promote online, and yes they go out for commercials. Mainstream pays and people have kids to feed. Are they not to promote their business because of an ideological disagreement with mainstream?

Capoeria left Brazil with capoeiristas doing acrobatic fast spectacular shows. Even Mestre Bimba was all about walking into newspapers offices demanding interviews. Would capoeira have come this far (USA, Europe, Asia, Australia) this fast, (~50 years) if mainstream did not play its’ part?

Your right mainstream will not portray true Capoeira

I throw my lot with the dynamic individuals that can find nourishment within the toxic field. I follow teachers who navigate the hypocritical landscape of capitalism and covert economical/social/political oppression and within that space, pass on good knowledge, and do it with a happy heart.

In core that is Capoeira esthetic and strategy.

Hating on Wal-Mart and Mazda, isn’t

If it means my berimbau costs 15 bucks instead of 50? sure! lol I'm joking.

I drive a Mazda.....been recalled TWICE 'cos the darn thing died ...electricals...right in the middle of a junction in oncoming traffic...lucky it was light...but I reminded them that Zoom Zoom is a capoeira song and sent them a little translation of it and asked if it specifically referred to my car, a Mazda Tribute, which is the original zoom zoom car...wanna sue? OK, I'm in! :))

Ok, Macaco has some really good points, and I can agree. The people who find capoeira through some means or another, then seek the REAL capoeira.. of course that's a positive thing. And I definitely can agree about having mouths to feed and needing to make a living.. And using mainstream to hustle? Sure, I'm down.. As long as you don't have to compromise what you know to be right and true and good.
Don't hate on my double-v; what, you've never had a broken key before?
I had to improvise... (hahahaa)
