- Capoeira Apelido and its meaning/explanation:
- Compromisso; it means dedication. I believe when i received the name from my Instructor Gaivota, i was one of his first students to always attend weekly class, events, rodas, etc. so he decided to call me Compromisso! cool name, i like it although tough to live up to as many people are much more dedicated to capoeira i am these days.

- I began my training with Nacaco Capoeira of New Jersey under Mestre Bayano, but directly trained under Asustado. Then moved on to Grupo Liberdade of Montclair, NJ under Instructor Gaivota at the time, later trained in NYC with Njoli and Puck of Grupo FICA NYC capoeira angola. In total id say ive been around the capoeira scene for about 3 years. Now you may find in the mix of House\Salsa dancing Capoeira and my IT Career.

Thank you for your response, and thank everyone else who has responded. I appreciate all the feedback, and I will be honest and say I did learn a thing or two from this ongoing discussion, but that hasn't changed my mind about capoeira...

This is some interesting stuff you bring up Jon, and I've already posted some of my responses in the other thread.
We cannot learn the way the old mestres did. They didn't learn in classes. They didn't have schools. There was no formal structure....

- I also sing songs about faeries, monsters and many other types of folklore, to me thats what Candomble/Christianity/Paganism/Islam represent, folklore. I also read lots of fantasy and horror novels, some that feature characters of folklore and some that mock them. Does this further disqualify me as an atheist?
I have a very strong dislike for all forms of organised religion as I believe that it is inherently corrupted, dangerous and opportunistic in taking advantage of the most vunerlable in society. I also don't believe in the existence of any god or deity, but I don't see the need to broadcast this.
I sing the songs and wear the white, secure in my own beliefs and proud to pay respect to the people who created and shared this beautiful art. I don't care what other people think, and if my singing or wearing white is misinterpreted as representing my personal beliefs I am ok with explaining to people that I am an athiest.
